Gender[edit]

We use Wikidata to generate these lists. Wikidata tracks gender using the sex and gender property (P21). It is important to remember that these lists are only as good as the data in Wikidata. The property that captures gender conflates sex and gender, which is problematic. Like all of Wikidata, community conversations on this topic continue to evolve. These lists reflect the best data available at this time, given the constraints with Wikidata.

  • HumanWiki is a tool that tracks gender breakdown among different language versions of Wikipedia, Wikidata, and other projects
  • A list of gender values - This is a list of gender values currently used on Wikidata
  • Link to property discussion - Tracking gender can be problematic. Participating in discussions about its usage will improve its use on Wikidata
  • P21 is used just under 8.5 million times (2 million people on Wikidata are missing P21 statements), according to the property's documentation page. You'll have to scroll down to see it when you click through
  • Women identifying individuals are underrepresented on Wikipedia. This list purposefully does not include them. If you are interested in improving the representation of Women on Wikipedia, there is an entire project devoted to this called Women in Red. Follow this link to see their outstanding work and to participate. The resources on this page will focus on genders outside of the gender binary with at least ten uses on Wikidata (in other words gender values that show up fewer than ten times across Wikidata and Wikipedia are not included here).
