Wharton "Wattie" Peers Davies (October 1874[2] — April→June 1961 (aged 87)[3]) born in St Ishmael's, was a Welsh rugby union and professional rugby league footballer of the 1890s, 1900s and 1910s, playing representative level rugby union (RU) for Cardiff and District XV, and at club level for (the now defunct) Cardiff Northern RFC, and Cardiff RFC, as a Fullback, i.e. number 15, and playing representative level rugby league (RL) for Yorkshire, and at club level for Batley, as a three-quarter, i.e. Wing, or Centre, his death was registered in Spen Valley district.
Playing career
County honours
Wattie Davies represented Yorkshire while at Batley, and scored five conversions against Durham county rugby league team at Belle Vue, Wakefield during November 1903.[4]
Challenge Cup final appearances
Wattie Davies played Right-Wing, i.e. number 2, and unusually missed two conversions in Batley's 10-3 victory over St. Helens in the 1897 Challenge Cup final during the 1896–97 season at Headingley Stadium, Leeds on Saturday 24 April 1897.[5]
Career records
Davies still holds Batley's career appearance, goal, and point records,[6] and is one of less than twenty-five Welshmen to have scored more than 1000 points in their rugby league careers.[7]
