Original – Caltrop from Vietnam - 1968. This item was brought back from Vietnam by 1LT Jack Slimp, Jr. in 1968. It is an iron caltrop and has been spray painted to help preserve it.
Reason
This photograph illustrates one of the most widely used devices to prevent the passage of people over an area of land, particularly in times and places of war. The caltrop has been painted to preserve the quality and to enhance its contrast against the background. The caltrop in the photo is easy to see and one can see the manner in which the two nails are twisted together to form the tetragonal shape of the resulting four spikes. This photo is a very valuable addition to the articles it accompanies, as the reader can see how the device was used for centuries as a method of prevent unwanted crossing of land.
