Snow in Afghanistan[edit]

Snow capped trees I photographed during a deployment to Afghanistan. That winter season (2003-2004) had one of the worst snowfall deluges in over 50 years[1] causing widespread flash floods after it melted.
Edit took it to Photoshop CS, adjusted, color, hue/saturation, sharpness, and levels.

I believe this picture should be nominated because:

  • This image is of high quality itself with great visual clarity, high resolution, and demonstrates accurate color with very little digital noise.
  • This image upholds and is supportive the article in question: Snow very well.
  • Is centered on the subject well and demonstrates the natural beauty of nature appropriately.
  • Is devoid of any human interferance or interaction and snow being a force of nature, I feel is best shown with little or no interference in its natural, lush, and innocent setting.
  • Opens the minds of Wiki viewers to a world of natural innocence and beauty.
  • Is in tune with current events, although current and events is relative.
  • Is of honorable nature.
  • On a personal note could be made into a postcard.

  • Oppose. Regretfully, I don't think this is an especially good depiction of "snow". The snow in this shot has a sickly yellow-greenish-brownish color cast, and there is some purple fringing around the tree branches due to the lens or CCD of the digital camera used. --Janke | Talk 16:21, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose, unfortunately has a lot of sentimental meaning which doesn't come across by itself in the image. The viewer sees a sick-looking tree with some inspid looking snow hanging onto it. It looks like it could be anywhere. I was actually recently looking for a good title photo for the snow article and realised how hard it is to find one - but with so much tree and so little snow, this wouldn't be it. As an informative photo, I would also prefer a wider field of view, to see more of the context than simply these trees - some middleground and background would help a lot.   • Tough crowd, I made a few adjustments and posted this version on the snow page. The constructive critiscism served to improve the picture though, if this one is good enough let me know and I will put it up, although I don't find this picture boring, it would have been better to post this in the winter time when winter is of interest. A better digital camera couldent hurt either. Its been awhile since I actually had Formal photography training, I am more of a hobbiest about it.Mark 15:52 UTC, 30 MAY 06

  • Oppose I got tired of looking at it, I nominate for removal. Let me know when and I'll delete it. Comparing this to most the other pictures I have I think this is one of the better pictures I have taken. But seeing such negative turnout and not having the time, patience, or money to take decent pictures of something other than the only two places I have ever been Southern USA and there, I would rather enjoy sights like these and be happy with myself in just knowing I saw them is good enough.
