User:Bon courage/Lede bombing

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dropping a truth bomb on the lede might seem like a good idea to "fix" the POV of an article, but will usually end up damaging the article's fabric.

Sometimes an editor will try to alter an article with a surgical strike on the lede, perhaps adding new content to shift the POV or announce some dramatic information.

MOS:LEAD says that "significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article". So, even apart from other considerations, it is wrong if material appears in the lede that is not covered elsewhere. A typical giveaway of this happening is that any supporting citation occurs only once, referenced from the lede.

If new material is truly WP:DUE, it should first be added to the article body. The lede might then be changed to reflect the body, if the addition is significant enough to merit mention in the lede.
