Copyright status

I have been given contact details for the likely photographer of this image, and have e-mailed to request more information on copyright status. --Vinoir 16:18, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

I wonder if we can make a fair-use rationale based on the near impossibility of finding a free alternative? Perhaps we should ask an expert, such as the editor who raised the objections at the FAC. --kingboyk 10:24, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Had an unusual message from the photographer, who says among other things that it is his shot, that the Austrian release used it without his permission and he is not happy with its use. I think that the only possibility for the image staying is the "impossible free alternative" route. Do you know offhand whether any of the images here are usable...? --Vinoir 15:25, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Dunno. But if you go to http://www.brandnew.co.uk/ and click on KLF, there are some great photos of Bill & Jim in the studio, e.g. [1]. It looks like it's a fan site and it looks like original work. Maybe they would let us use their work? The only other alternative I can think of is the "Why sheep?" picture, which we can safely assume KLF Comms own. It would be fair use to use that I think. --kingboyk 15:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
If you're willing to contact brandnew, we can try that avenue with "Why sheep?" as an interrim/backup measure. I guess this image will have to be removed the article and nominated for deletion. --kingboyk 20:04, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
The brandnew pics are fantastic, and high quality. It would be great to use the one you pointed out, and it does no harm to ask at brandnew, so I will. However (this may sound strange) despite its many good points, I'm not sure it's sufficiently representative of The KLF to be the lead image: I think the "Why Sheep?" pic is better from that point of view, as it's more "Rockman Rock and Kingboy D" than "Jimmy and Bill". If we were allowed the brandnew pic, I'd personally like to see it in ===The KLF=== subsection, at the right chronological point, and also either as the lead KLF discography/KLF Communications image or at Trancentral. --Vinoir 01:03, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, very good point. They are fantastic candid photos of Jim and Bill, not Rockman and Kingboy. Let's ditch this one and go with Why Sheep? then. --kingboyk 09:21, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for all the trouble with that image - I'd assumed that because it was used on the cover of a version of the single that it had been comissioned by the group themselves and was therefore covered for fair use under Press Photo terms. I personally think that the shots on brandnew are better if permission could be obtained as the "Why Sheep?" does not have a particularly high level of image clarity. Again, many apologies for the problems with the image and still awesome work on the article! (KLF are gonna rock ya!) Martin Hinks 10:05, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Did you contact brandnew and if so was there a reply? I'd love see one of their images in the "KLF" section of the main article. --kingboyk 13:47, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
No, I'd completely forgotten, strangely enough. I've just sent an e-mail. --Vinoir 14:41, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
