Winchester Thurston School is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The school was created by a merger in 1935 of the Winchester School (established in 1887) and Thurston School (established in 1902). Originally an all-girls school, it became co-educational in 1991.

It has two campuses: a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 City Campus in Shadyside, and since 1988 a suburban, pre-kindergarten through grade five North Hills Campus in Hampton Township, Pennsylvania.[2] The city campus expanded in 2006 with a new upper school building across from the lower school building.[3]

In the Upper School, clubs include How Things Work, Amnesty International, Mock Trial, People of Color, Becca's Closet, and more. It offers training in drama, dance, and voice beginning in grade six.

Its school newspaper is Voices, which is published monthly. It also has an award-winning literary magazine known as Plaid.[citation needed]

Academics

Winchester Thurston students do very well on standardized testing. Winchester Thurston is known for its strong acting and drama department as well as for college preparation. There are opportunities for gifted math students, and advanced placement classes for almost every subject in high school. However, in middle school, there are no opportunities for gifted students in language arts or other classes, leaving some bored and unsatisfied.

Sports

Winchester Thurston competes in sports such as cross country running, lacrosse, tennis, field hockey, fencing, basketball, table tennis, rowing, soccer, and golfing.[4]

Performing Arts

Winchester Thurston also has a strong performing arts department, with the Middle School musical in the fall and the Upper School in the Spring. Winchester Thurston is often the recipient of Gene Kelly Awards for Upper School Musicals.[7]

Bullying

Winchester Thurston has made it a strong priority to focus on eliminating any instance that could be considered bullying, especially in the middle school. Unfortunately, this has lead to some actions that many students feel to be extreme such as assigned lunch seats and an excess of classes focusing on reducing bullying in the school environment. As a result, many students feel like the program is a joke due to its overbearing nature, which reduces its effectiveness.
