Yes Vancouver, stylized as YES Vancouver, is a municipal political party in Vancouver, created in June 2018 to support the candidacy of Hector Bremner for mayor and his ideas to fix the city's housing shortage. The party's platform proposes to increase the supply of housing, cap permit wait times, and establish a citywide plan, among others.
History
Hector Bremner was first elected as an NPA councillor in the 2017 by-election, but political opponents on the NPA board blocked him from running for mayor in 2018 and taking part in the party's internal nomination election. The board majority never revealed its reasons for blocking his candidacy and there was no vote from the party membership on the matter.[1] This resulted in a split between Bremner and the NPA,[2] prompting Bremner to leave the board and create Yes Vancouver on June 28, 2018.[3]
Ideology
The platform of Yes Vancouver is mainly focused on the city's housing shortage. The party promises to increase the supply of rental housing in Vancouver to reduce the cost of rent, by establishing citywide pre-zoning, using incentives on city-owned land to add affordable housing, and capping permit times.[4]
Yes Vancouver's education platform includes expanding basic financial education in schools and offering more diverse language options.[5]
Electoral history
Party leader Hector Bremner is Yes Vancouver's mayoral candidate for the Vancouver municipal election on October 20, 2018. Five candidates from Yes Vancouver are running for city council: entrepreneurs Brinder Bains, Glynnis Chan, Stephanie Ostler, Phyllis Chan and Jaspreet Virdi. Educator Julian Prieto is running for the Vancouver School Board and coach Leo Heba is running for the Vancouver Park Board.[6]
