Central plaza in Zarumilla

Zarumilla is a town in the Tumbes Region, in northwestern Peru. It has a population of 17,587 (1999) and is the capital of the Zarumilla Province. It is also the main settlement in the Zarumilla District.

It is located only a few kilometers away from the border town of Aguas Verdes, which is connected to Ecuador by a bridge.

During the Ecuadorian-Peruvian War, Ecuadorian forces occupied the town, which was the setting of the Battle of Zarumilla. After this, Peruvian forces occupied the province of El Oro in Ecuador; this brief war was a success for the Peruvians.
