Moshe Idel (Hebrew: משה אידל; born January 19, 1947) is a Romanian-born Israeli academic and a leading authority on the Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism. Max Cooper Professor (Emeritus) of Jewish Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he is a Senior Fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute, an Israel Prize laureate in Jewish Studies, and as of August 2013, president of the World Union of Jewish Studies. Prof. Idel has authored over 20 books and edited eight volumes, and his works have been translated into many languages. He has been instrumental in the development of Jewish Studies as an international academic field and influential in its revival in Eastern and Central Europe.
