I have always had a passion for English language since I was a small child. I remember when I was in 4th grade at the primary school my teacher asked whether I would like to study English or Russian language. It was an easy decision, I chose English, but she did not agree. The reason why she signed me up for Russian language was that I could not even speak Slovak properly, as she explained. I am still wondering why she gave me those options when decision was already made... After 5 years of studying Russian language I had completed my studies at the primary school and moved on to the secondary school, where my English studies have started. By that time one of my brothers decided to move to London where he has been living ever since. My next unsuccessful steps in studies at University of Zilina led me to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland where I had been living for 3 years before I made my next move to come back “home” to Slovakia. The first “real” experience with English language in the UK was not piece of cake. My first job was to help construction workers as a labourer; I was supposed to report to my new construction supervisor and because I did not speak English very well, I learnt all possible sentences he could have asked. I did not take into consideration his accent and situational options such as surroundings. He said: “see container” and it was so fast that I had to ask 3 times to repeat that and I still did not understand; he got so mad. Every cloud has a silver lining and my silver lining was that I realized I need to learn and practice English more, so I did. I had a dream to speak English so well that when I say a joke, English people will laugh. It took me 6 months, but I got there. I spend my last year in the UK in Oxford where I was staying in the hostel with bunch of people from all over the world. I really wanted to come back to Slovakia but all I knew was English. I applied to University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava and I was accepted to study English language. At the university, I was introduced to international students run organization called AIESEC, which provides internships for university students and recent graduates. I was an active member and during those 3 years I had a chance to be on all local branch level positions of this organization. In the last part of my experience I was leading 28 people and successfully completed my term. Because we were sending people to all over the world, I wanted to know what they were going through, so I contacted my Indonesian friends and they created opportunity suited just for me. I became an English language lecturer at LIA language school in Bandung where I was teaching English for 4 months. My students were all different ages, from small children to senior citizens. It was challenging, but I do not like staying in my comfort zone. When I returned from Indonesia, I applied to become a chairman of Organization Committee for the International Train the Trainers Slovakia 2016 conference. I was chosen for this position by committee and right after I head-hunted 5 people who become my new team. Conference was profitable, delegates from 13 different countries were satisfied and that made me satisfied too. Being bored is not what I strive for. I love new challenges, so when I got an e-mail from one British head-hunter, who offered me a job at Japanese company, I said yes. I successfully completed 6 different skype interviews with HR department, sales manager and general manager but I did not get the job. I guess I did not really want to work there but right after I received a phone call from company Diplomat Dental based in Piestany, went for an interview and become an Area Sales Manager. I provided sales, trainings and care for my partners from Europe and Middle East. Attendance at international exhibitions was part of my job; I regularly visited Serbia, Hungary, Turkey and Germany. Because of my ongoing studies, I could not attend exhibitions in the United Arab Emirates, but I have already visited Dubai anyway. One of the reasons why I quit this job was that I was accepted for PhD studies in Ethnology at the Faculty of Arts of University of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava. I want to keep developing myself and to jump out of my comfort zone as far as I can. My next steps lead me to the conference in Wrocław in Poland where I am joining Wikipedia workshop between 15-18. November 2018. I really look forward to meeting anthropologists from around the globe.
