Original – Men of the Docks (oil on canvas, 1912) is a painting by Ashcan artist George Bellows which depicts some day laborers at the docks of Brooklyn on a winter's day, apparently receiving news. It has been described as "the definitive essay on the U.S. in the first half of the 20th century ... big, brawny, tough."

Reason

Very well completed painting which is significant in part for the controversy over its sale (although discussion of a sale began in 2008, it wasn't sold until 2014...). Also, it's the National Gallery's first major American painting.
