The Austrian Lawyers Association “Juristenverband”, headquartered in Vienna, with its approximately 2500 members is one of the largest private associations in Austria. It is well known in the legal community especially due to its regular club evenings and the annual lawyers ball in the Vienna imperial palace "Hofburg".

The magazine Nova & Varia is free for members. The objectives of the association are the representation of the members' political interests, further education, social activities and charitable activities.

History:

[edit]

The Austrian Lawyers' Association goes back to a group of lawyers in post-war Vienna. On September 13, 1948, this group founded the Vienna Association of attorney candidates. With most of them becoming attorneys-at-law, in 1951 the association was renamed into "Austrian Lawyers Association – Association of Attorney Candidates". Since 1988 the association has been operating as the “Austrian Lawyers' Association”.

Organisation:

[edit]

In accordance with the Austrian law on associations, the Austrian Lawyers Association acts through its general assembly, the president and the executive board, the board of arbitrators and the controllers. On 1 March 2019 the general assembly elected Alexander T. Scheuwimmer as the new President.

Internally, the Austrian Lawyers Association is organized in five clubs: The Club of the Associates is today the largest association of this professional group with about 550 members. The Lawyers' Club is the largest lawyers' club; together with the Club 2000 it counts more than 1200 lawyers as its members. The Judiciary Club counts around 300 judges, judicial law clerks, state attorney, university professors, assistants, judicial apprentices and law students. The Club of General Lawyers counts more than 450 civil servants, notaries and notary candidates, as well as accountants / tax consultants. The Austrian Lawyers Association originally contained four clubs and exists since 1951; the Club 2000 was added later. Each club has a club chairman, who is responsible for keeping the club’s interests, in the Presidium of the general association as well as externally and especially at the respective state authority.
