Álvaro Mejía Pérez (born January 18, 1982 in Madrid) is a Spanish footballer who currently plays for Real Murcia, mainly as a central defender.
[edit] Club career
Mejía started his football career at CD Las Rozas. He signed for Real Madrid in 1998, moving to its Junior C side. He was promoted to B in 1999–2000, joining the A the following year.
Mejía joined the third division team in 2001–02 and moved straight into the second team, being admitted into the main side the following season, and making his first division debut in a January 21, 2004 home win against Villarreal CF (2–1, 90 minutes played). He also appeared in the UEFA Champions League, in a March 3, 2004 1–0 home win against FC Bayern Munich in the round of 16 (90 minutes).[1] At the end of that season, he renewed his link until 2010,[2] and his appearance in the first team's defence was subsequently put to use in different positions.
The following season, Mejía appeared in just five games for Real Madrid, all competitions combined, adding 26 league games the following two seasons, with his first and only goal coming in a 2–0 away win at Real Betis, on October 29, 2005, after one minute on the pitch, having subbed Carlos Diogo.[3]
In July 2007, Mejía joined top flight newcomers Real Murcia on a four-year link,[4] and scored in the first league round, in a 2–1 home win against Real Zaragoza. A starter throughout the vast majority of the season, he faced relegation for the first time in his career.
