The 2013 Pac-12 Football Championship Game was played on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Sun Devil Stadium to determine the 2013 football champion of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12).[1] North Division Champions Stanford defeated South Division Champions Arizona State 38–14. The ESPN television networks broadcast the game, beginning at 4:45 PM PT/5:45 PM MT.[2] The Stanford Cardinal represented the Pac-12 Conference in the Rose Bowl Game on New Year's Day, January 1, 2014.
History
The game is the third football conference championship for the Pac-12 Conference (or any of its predecessors). The previous season, the Stanford Cardinal defeated the UCLA Bruins 27–24 to win the Championship and represented the conference in the 2013 Rose Bowl game.
Teams
Stanford
For the fourth season in a row, the Cardinal have won 10 or more games. Led by LB Trent Murphy and LB Shayne Skov, the defense has allowed just 87.3 yards rushing (No. 3 in the FBS) and is averaging 2.92 sacks (tied for No. 11 in FBS). Offensively, Stanford is led by RB Tyler Gaffney, who gained 1,485 yards this season for 17 touchdowns; and WR Ty Montgomery, who has gained 161.9 all-purpose yards per game and scored 12 touchdowns.
Arizona State
Arizona State is playing in its first Pac-12 Championship game, having completed its first 10-win season. During the season, the team has out-scored its opponents by 84 points and has a 7-0 record when playing in its own stadium. Placekicker Zane Gonzalez has kicked 18 consecutive field goals. In six games, the Sun Devils has scored more than 50 points. Arizona State is led by QB Taylor Kelly, who has scored seven touchdowns in six games. The secondary, anchored by two senior DBs in Alden Darby and Robert Nelson, has allowed just 217.2 passing yards per game. Nelson ties the lead in the Pac-12 conference with six interceptions.
