Maria Sharapova was the defending champion, but lost in the fourth round to Lucie Šafářová.

Serena Williams won her third French Open title and 20th major overall, defeating first-time Grand Slam finalist Šafářová in the final, 6–3, 6–7(2–7), 6–2. This win gave Williams her third Career Grand Slam.[1][2] Williams also became the first woman since Jennifer Capriati in 2001 to win the Australian Open and the French Open in the same year, and the first to win the US Open, Australian Open and French Open titles consecutively since Monica Seles (1991–92).[3]

Šafářová became the first Czech woman to reach the French Open final since Hana Mandlíková in 1981.
