Abshir Omar Jama (Huruse) (Somali: Abshir Cumar Jaamac (Huruuse), Arabic: أبشير عمر جمعة هرس) is a Somali politician and the current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia[2] since 2 August 2022.[3]

Political Career

Huruse for the majority of his life was a businessman, only entering politics sometime in the 2010s.[1] The first time Huruse entered the political stage was on 19 July 2020, when he was elected to become the Secretary General of the Puntland political organization Mideeye.[1][4]

Minister of Foreign Affairs

On 2 August 2022, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre appointed Huruse as the next Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in part of a wider cabinet reshuffle he organized when taking office.[5] On 13 August 2022, Huruse was officially sworn into the position along with his deputy Isaak Mohamud Mursal at a ceremony with PM Barre and the new State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali Mohamed Omar in attendance.[6]

As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Huruse has so far conducted multiple meetings and talks with representatives of Somalia's allies; including Algeria on 5 October,[7] the Arab League on 7 September[8] and 29 October,[9] Bangladesh on 12 October,[10] Belgium on 12 October,[10] China on 10 September,[11] Denmark on 12 October,[10] Djibouti on 16 August,[12] Ethiopia on 16 August,[13] 28 September,[14] and 6 October,[15] the European Union on 10 September,[16] Germany on 12 October,[10] Italy on 10 September,[17] Jordan on 31 October,[18] Kenya on 17 August[19] and 14 September,[20] Kuwait on 7 September[21] and 31 October,[22] Libya on 19 October,[23] Qatar on 22 August,[24] Slovenia on 7 September,[25] South Africa on 12 October,[10] Sudan on 4 October,[26] Sweden on 19 October,[27] Turkey on 19 August[28] and 12 October,[29] the United Kingdom on 18 August,[30] the United Nations on 18 August[31][32] and 19 October,[33] Uganda on 9 August,[34][35] and conducted a consultation meeting with the Prime Minister in Puntland.[36]

Huruse, as a representative of Somalia, attended the Seventy-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.[37][38] During the generate debate which primarily took place from 20 to 26 September 2022, Huruse held his first meetings with fellow representatives from the nations of Azerbaijan,[39] Finland,[40] Ireland,[41] Libya,[42] Morocco,[43][44] Norway,[45] Romania,[46] Saudi Arabia,[47] Sri Lanka,[48] and Sudan.[49] Huruse also held his second meetings Ethiopia[50] with China.[51] Most notably to come out of the event, Huruse's talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita led to an agreement between the two which approved the opening of a Somali "embassy in Rabat and a consulate general in Dakhla," according to Huruse.[43][44]

During his time as Foreign Minister, Huruse has argued repeatedly before the international community and the United Nations for the repeal of the arms embargo to the nation, which currently remains in effect, which he has stated is crucial if there is to be victory in the fight against Al-Shabaab in the nation.[52] On 21 October, Huruse also helped organize the opening of the country to international companies– beginning with a "major" oil agreement with Coastline Exploration Ltd.[53]
