Anne West, Lady De La Warr (née Knollys) (19 July 1555 – 30 August 1608) was a lady at the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Biography

Anne Knollys was the third daughter of Sir Francis Knollys, Treasurer of the Royal Household (1514–1596) to Queen Elizabeth I, and his wife Lady Catherine Carey.

Her maternal grandparents were Sir William Carey and Mary Boleyn. Mary was a sister of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII of England. Anne Knollys' mother was thus a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth, daughter of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. Mary Boleyn had preceded her more famous sister in the King's affections, and had affairs with both Francis I of France and Henry VIII. Both Catherine Carey and Henry Carey may have been Henry's children, although we are unsure of their exact dates of birth. If true, this would make Anne the granddaughter of Henry VIII..

Anne's eldest sister was Lettice Knollys, chief Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Elizabeth and the mother of the queen's favourite, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex.

Marriage and children

On 19 November 1571 at Wherwell in Hampshire where they subsequently lived, Anne was married to Thomas West, 2nd Baron De La Warr, with whom she had thirteen children:

• Walsingham West, died young.
• Elizabeth West (Wherwell, Hampshire, 11 September 1573 - Valence, Dorset, 15 January 1632), married firstly in Wherwell, Hampshire, on 12 February 1593 Sir Herbert Pelham, Esq. and Knt., of Michelham (Bucksteep, Sussex, 1546 - Fordington, Dorset, 12 April 1620), already a widower with issue of Catherine Thatcher (Westham, Sussex, ca. 1550 - Bucksteep, Sussex, ca. 1593), whom he married in Westham, Sussex, ca. 1565, and had issue; and secondly Richard Saltonstall.
• Robert West (b. 1574), married Elizabeth Coks. Predeceased his father.
• Margarey West (b. 1576), married Samuel Johnson.
• Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr (1577–1618), married Lady Cicely Shirley.
• Lettice West (b. 1579), married Sir Henry Ludlow.
• Anne West (b. 1581), married John Pellet (Esq.).
• Penelope West (born Sussex, 9 September 1582), married in Warbleton, Suffolk, ca. 1599, Herbert Pelham, Esq. (born Warbleton, Suffolk, ca. 1580), stepson of her sister Elizabeth.
• Catherine West (b. 1583), married Nickolas Strelby.
• Francis West, Governor of Virginia (b. 1586-1634), married 1. Lady Margaret Reeves; 2. Lady Jane Davye; and 3. Lady Temperance Flowerdew.
• Helena West (b. 1587), married William Savage.
• John West, Governor of Virginia (1590–1659), married Anne Percy, daughter of George Percy
• Nathaniel West, (Lt. Col.) (1592-1623/1624), born on November 30 and died in Virginia, married Frances Greville.
