Bagus Santoso (born 12 February 1969) is an Indonesian politician, journalist, and writer who currently serves as 5th Deputy Regent of Bengkalis Regency from 26 February 2021. He formerly served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Riau from 2009 until 2019 and as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Bengkalis from 2004 until 2009.

Early life[edit]

Santoso was born on 12 February 1969 in Boyolali, Central Java.[1][2] He graduated from high school in Karanganyar Regency and went to STAI Bengkalis, and earned his master's degree from IPB University.[3] Santoso then earned his Ph.D degree from National University majoring in political science in 2023 with a thesis about "Winning Strategy in Legislative Elections".[2][3]

Santoso is married to Siti Aisyah and has had three children, Daviq, Brillian, and Bimo.[3]

Career[edit]

Santoso started his career as a radio announcer in Bengkalis, in 1997 and became a journalist for Riau Pos, Dumai Pos, and Mingguan Utusan, from 1999 until 2003.[1] He then joined Indonesian Journalists Association and won a national award in 2001.[1] Santoso later became a lecturer at STAI Bengkalis from 2003 until 2009.[1] He served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Bengkalis from 2004 until 2009 followed by served as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives in Riau from 2009 until 2019.[1] Santoso also served as Chairman of Commission A and D at the House of Representatives in Jakarta from 2009 until 2013 and 2013 until 2014, respectively.[1] He then actively involved in 21 organizations from various backgrounds, such as politics, regional, profession, education, and sports.[1]

In 2020, Santoso ran for regional elections with Kasmarni as a candidate for deputy regent of Bengkalis Regency and became the winner by earning 91,291 votes or around 33 percent of total vote.[4] They were then elected at Governor of Riau Office in Pekanbaru on 26 February 2021.[5][1]
