The President of the United States is given the power to grant pardons or commutations to people accused of or convicted of criminal activity. Pardons can be given to prevent the prosecution of a criminal offense, or to mitigate the punishment for an offense for which a person has been convicted, to restore civil rights to a convicted person or to erase the conviction altogether.
