The NI Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) defines a town as having a population of 4,500 or more. Settlements of 2,250 to 4,500 people are defined as intermediate settlements, villages are defined as having populations of 1,000 to 2,250 people and small villages and hamlets are defined as having less than 1,000 people (ref: Report of the Inter-Departmental Urban-Rural Definition Group – Statistical Classification and Delineation of Settlements, February 2005). For this reason there are only 15 proper villages in Northern Ireland

For the purposes of this list a village is taken to be any settlement with less than 4,500 people.
