"Damaged Lady"
Song

"Sungnyeoga mot dwae" (숙녀가 못 돼; Can't Be A Lady) listed in English as "Damaged Lady", is a song by Korean pop girl group Kara. It is the group's second track from their fourth studio album, Full Bloom, and was released digitally to online music sites as well as radio stations on September 2, 2013.[1]

Background

In August 27, two video teasers were released for the music video of "숙녀가 못 돼 (Damaged Lady)", with the first being released in August 26[2] and the second two days later, on August 28.[3] A preview of the album was revealed in August 29, containing 10-15 second previews to all tracks, except the instrumentals. A third and final teaser, which revealed more of both song and music video, was released in August 30.

Composition

The song is an upbeat synthpop dance track with influences from pop rock and R&B genres. It was written by Song Soo-yun and composed by musical duo Sweetune, composed of Han Jae-ho and Kim Seung-soo. The duo has composed the title tracks for the group since "Rock U". Group member Nicole stated that it was about a girl who isn't mature enough to handle a break-up in a relationship and that many women can relate to the song.[4]

Critical reception

Jeff Benjamin of Billboard's K-pop column complimented its fusion of synth and rock-pop stating that the group "carves a sonic lane all their own". He also wrote that the music video's concept was "an appropriate visual for a track detailing an unexpectedly break-up and the accompanying frustration."[5]

Cha Yo-rim of The Korean Herald criticized the song for lacking group individuality. She wrote that "the voice of each member is difficult to discern" and felt that it was due to the "copious amount of auto-tuning" used throughout the album.[6]

Live performances

The group will be holding an album showcase on September 2 at UNIQLO-AX Hall to celebrate its release and will be live streamed on Naver.[citation needed]
