Draft:30x30 Initiative

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 30x30 Initiative aims to increase the representation of women in police recruit classes to 30 percent by 2030 and ensure police policies and culture intentionally support the success of qualified women officers throughout their careers.[1]

It was cofounded by Ivonne Roman[2][3] and Maureen McGough in March, 2021.[4] [5]

Ivonne Roman is a recognized leader in policing, known for her advocacy for increased representation and support for women in law enforcement[6]. Her TED Talk, How PoliceWomen Make Communities Safer[7] documents research on the positive outcomes associated with a higher representation of women in law enforcement[8], and barriers to the integration of women in policing.[9] She co-founded the 30x30 Initiative, which aims to increase the representation of women in police recruit classes to 30% by 2030. Roman has a significant background in law enforcement, having served in the Newark Police Department in various capacities, including as the city's first Latino Chief[10] of Police.[11]

Maureen McGough is similarly a prominent figure in the field of criminal justice reform and law enforcement, involved in initiatives aimed at reforming and improving the law enforcement system. She has been instrumental in launching the 30x30 Initiative.[12]She was Chief of Staff at the NYU School of LawPolicing Project[13][14] and was senior policy advisor at the National Institute of Justice[15], contributing her expertise to various aspects of policing and criminal justice, including the creation of the NIJ LEADS Scholars program[16] and the NIJ Sentinel Event Initiative.[17]

Together, Roman and McGough's work[18], especially through the 30x30 Initiative[19], represents a significant contribution to addressing gender disparities[20] and promoting reform in law enforcement practices[21]

The initiative has over 400 partnering police departments, ranging from small police departments[22][23][24] to large[25][26][27][28][29], state police[30] [31][32][33] federal law enforcement[34] [35][36]agencies, and has expanded into Canada.[37]

30x30 partnering police departments have implemented a series of policy changes to meet the initiative goals, such as ensuring women's uniforms are available[38][39], establishing child care centers,[40][41] mentoring programs,[42][43]maternity leave policies,[44] [45] leadership development[46][47], fitness preparation assistance,[48][49] and accommodations for nursing mothers.[50][32]
