Plot[edit]

Paatshala (school) is a story of hope, friendship, and the courage to follow one's dream. Uprooted from his home, 10-year old Manik struggles to build a new life in the city. He soon realises that getting an education is the only way of overcoming the clear divide between the rich and the poor. With the help of a 8-year old girl, Chumki, and a bagful of magic tricks, Manik sets out to fulfil his dreams of joining the local school. This film follows him as he uses discipline, hard work and self-confidence to make a remarkable journey from the dusty slum streets to the classroom. This movie is based on a social context concerned with the proverb 'Education for all' . Manik belongs to a poor family insufficient for living .[3] Things worsened when Manik's mother felt sick and Manik had to be the breadwinner of the family. Leaving his sick mother behind he sailed for Dhaka on a train but the dream of going to school is something that always peeped through Manik's mind. He wishes to go to school, have a life where he can afford education but the reality was entirely different. Meanwhile, Manik met Kalu. Kalu with a shadow of an antagonist in his character followed Manik and his motifs to be in Dhaka when Manik was talking to his mother over the phone. Kalu is also an underprivileged boy , fighting for his survival but unlike Manik he has chosen a path to be a pickpocketer and he is a trainee of his gang led by a gangster. Kalu manipulated Manik to pay a heed to him and to be at the place where Kalu along with his team mates learn how to pickpocket, adopting unlawful means to trick people to earn their survival. But Manik's conscience helped him to spare. He managed to have a job at a mechanical workshop where he adopted his mastery in works within a short period of time. Regardless of the fact that he is a dropout he always nourished his passion for education. Which is evident in the film where Manik is seen to read books whenever he gets time. His quest for knowing things amazed his master and he soon developed a good bonding with Manik. Meanwhile Manik became friends with Chumki. A character who shared her books with him alongside playing with him. Chumki is a girl who belongs to the same social strata that Manik and Kalu belong to.Once Chumki had trouble while solving her Maths exercise. She could hardly solve it which made Manik Laugh and he urges to solve those equations. Chumki seemed to be suspicious about his merit and asked him if can do so. Manik made his mark and showed Chumki that he is really able to solve the equations that Chumki had hard times with. Chumki's Father Kedar Roy who previously worked as a motor driver noticed this and found out that this young Manik has an absolute passion for education but his fate is not with him to do so. Kedar Roy took a bow and took Manik to Chumki's school where he worked as a peon. But it was a hard nut to crack as the principal declined Manik's admission by stating that it's already the middle of the year and it's against the policy to make an admission out of the blue.Kedar Roy came home heart broken things even get worse when Manik had a phone call that he's mother is no more. The sky seemed to fall upon him . Heartbroken, devastated, Manik went to that car where he and Chumki often played. A sense of passion stroked in Manik and out of passion and also with the pinch of the mastery that he adopted from working in a workshop fixed the car which belongs to Kedar Roy. When Chumki exhibited it to Kedar Roy, his jaw dropped and something witty peeped through Kedar's mind. Kedar being a staff of the school took an opportunity and plagiarised a question of the upcoming exam and gave it to Manik in order to solve it. Manik solved it all and Kedar kept Manik's copy along with the other copies of the students. When the result came out it astonished the teachers that one of the students got one hundred and ten out of one hundred. The principal went on in the classroom and asked for the person who got this mark but forgot to write his or her name on it unintentionally driven by the passion for mathematics. Nobody replied because they could hardly recognize the copy. Kedar Roy admitted what he did and his intention behind it. As the excellence of Manik amazed the principal this time, she made a change and approved the admission of Manik at that school but as an act of treachery Kedar Roy was barred from his position but that hardly made a change as Kedar was too contended to attain the aim of this grassroot boy who made his journey all the way to here. Pathshala is a story of hope, passion and aspiration.[4] That there is always a hero within a human being. Sticking through it makes it work and that's where the children like Manik are no less than the superheroes that we perceive in our fantasies.[5]
