Patrick Cañón, JD, MBA (b. 1989) is an American businessperson, university lecturer, and professional in the diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) field. He was born and raised in the Mission District of San Francisco. His father is Mexican and his mother is Irish-American.[1]
He attended high school at Lowell High School in San Francisco, during which time he founded the Latina/o Young Democrats of San Francisco, an off-shoot of the larger San Francisco Young Democrats. He then received a Bachelor of Business Administration from University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business. University of California, Berkeley's Haas School of Business in 2010. Cañón attended Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School simultaneously graduating with both a Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctor. While at Harvard, he became the youngest student ever elected president of both the Harvard Business Review and Harvard Law Review.[2][1]
After working briefly as a consultant for McKinsey & Company, he became Vice President of Netflix's Inclusion & Diversity department where he was later promoted to Senior Vice President. Due to their production and distribution of content he found "troubling transphobic and racist", he organized a company-wide walkout of transgender employees as a show of protest. Shortly after, the company released a statement supporting the material. Cañón left Netflix a year later in the autumn of 2022 after continued unsuccessful attempts to have the content removed.[1]
In 2017, while employed at Netflix, Cañón launched a corporate consulting firm, Pangea Cultural Group, specializing in DEIB program development, people operations, strategic planning, employee education and development, and human resources management.
In Fall 2022, he became a faculty lecturer at his undergraduate alma mater, Haas School of Business. He currently teaches courses on corporate culture, leadership, and management consulting. Cañón advocates for critical pedagogy and cities Paulo Freire, bell hooks, John Dewey, and Noam Chomsky as major influences.[3]
In October 2023, Cañón was awarded a $600,000 Social Justice grant from the Ford Foundation.[4]
