Talbot Green FC is an amateur Welsh football team based in Talbot Green, who currently play in the Taff Ely & Rhymney Valley Alliance League Premier Division, which is at tier 7 of the Welsh football league system. The club re-formed in its current guise in 2010, as a phoenix club of of former South Wales Amateur League club, AFC Talbot Green.
Historical Success[edit]
The senior club has been a staple in the community at Talbot Park for generations as both Talbot Green FC & AFC Talbot Green and has had some relative historical success over the past decades in various guises and leagues through South Wales, Taff Ely Rhymney Valley Football League, Rhondda & Cardiff districts, however much of this is unfortunately not documented and has been lost. It is known they won the Cardiff District Division in 1964–65 and the Rhondda Challenge Cup in 1978–79.
In more recent times, they won the Bernard Martin Cup in 2006–07 and the club won the TERV Premier Division in 2007–08, achieving promotion to the old South Wales Amateur League Division 2. They finished 15th during the 2008–09 season,[1] achieving their highest ever known attendance at Talbot Park with a crowd of 542 vs Brynna FC.
Unfortunately, the club folded during the 2009–10 season through a run of poor form and loss of players.
Recent Success & Re-forming[edit]
Following the folding, the remaining members founded a new phoenix club was re-established in the bottom tier of Taff Ely Rhymney Valley Football League in 2010, joining the league for the 2010–11 season.
This followed several years of keeping the club afloat in obscurity in the bottom tier before they were eventually promoted to TERV Premier in 2014–15, where they finished 8th in their first season. Since then, they have finished 2nd in 2018–19, 3rd in 2019–20 and 2nd in 2022–23, as well as reaching the Cup Final in 2022–23, where they lost on penalties to Church Village FC.
Off field, the club decided in 2021–22 to merge with Llantrisant FC Juniors to create an aligned pathway for local children and one-club approach to create longevity for the club, whilst striving to achieve better success and experience for all going forward. This merger has created the room for growth that now caters for over 200 players from U6 to seniors, and continues to grow.
Further to this growth, the seniors expanded to 2 competitive teams in 2022–23 competing in the Taff Ely Rhymney Valley Football League league and now in their second season, have c60 players on book of all adult ages contributing to their success.
