Fabio Pammolli (born 11 January 1965) has been president of Jacobs University Bremen, an English-language campus university in Bremen, Germany, since 1 January 2022.[1] Previously, the Italian was professor of economics and management at the Polytechnic University of Milan. In his work as a scientist, Pammolli combines various methods from statistical physics and economics. He thus covers a wide range of topics that include the analysis of growth, diversification, instability of firms and economic as well as financial systems. In addition, Pammolli is active in university administration, on various supervisory and advisory boards, and as an author.

Academic career

After studying economics (1983 - 1987) and earning his PhD (1991) at the University of Pisa, Pammolli worked first as an assistant professor (from 1990) at the University of Sienna and later as a professor (from 2001) at the University of Florence. Research stays have taken him to Boston University, the London School of Economics, Sciences Po in Paris, Harvard University, Northeastern University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others. He was founding rector of the IMT School for Advanced Studies in Lucca (2004), where he also served as professor of economics and management. In 2016, he was appointed to the Polytechnic University of Milan.[2]

Other activities

In his career, Pammolli was involved far beyond academic activities. For example, from 2015 to 2020, he was a member of the Investment Committee of the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) at the European Investment Bank. He currently chairs the Investment Committee of InvestEU, the European Commission's new recovery plan to provide long-term finance to businesses and support EU policies.[3]

At the suggestion of the Italian Ministry of Finance, Pammolli is a member of the Board of Directors of ENAV, the national air traffic assistance company responsible for air traffic control in Italy. In the same capacity, he works for AREXPO. The company is developing the Expo 2015 site in Milan.[3] Pammolli is also a member of the Strategic Advisory Board of the Schaffhausen Institute of Technology, the majority shareholder of Jacobs University.[4]
