British battery in the Alam Bagh gardens, Lucknow, India, painted on 25/12/1857 by Lt. Clifford Henry Mecham, 9th Bengal Lancers, serving with 1st Madras Fusiliers in defence of Alam Bagh, annotated at bottom "I wish my future readers many happy returns of this festive season". Alam Bagh Palace shown to left. Scene during Siege of Lucknow. Apparently early morning looking north with the Asfi Mosque of the Bara Imambara in the distance (right of centre). The Residency would therefore be on the right edge of the composition, blocked from view by the foreground structure.
