Gavin Karl O'Reilly (born 17 December 1966) is a Dublin-born businessman with Irish and Australian citizenship. A triplet, he is the second son and fourth child of former Irish media magnate Sir Anthony O'Reilly (Tony O'Reilly) and Australian Susan (nee Cameron) O'Reilly A.M. (deceased Nov. 2014).[1]

As and from September 2015, he became Chief Marketing Officer of Starclub Inc, a next generation social media broadcast network. He is the former CEO of The Agency Group Limited, one of the largest live music agencies in the world, which was sold to United Talent Agency LLC in August 2015.[2] He was listed in Billboard Magazine's "The 2015 Billboard Power 100"[3] in January 2015 and lives in Los Angeles.

Prior to that, he was Group chief executive officer of Independent News and Media PLC, the then largest press group in Ireland and South Africa and one of the largest media groups (in press, radio and outdoor advertising) in Australia and New Zealand (through its then investment in APN News & Media) and leading media investments in Indian and Indonesia, with almost 200 titles and a readership of over 100 million.

He is also the former President of the World Association of Newspapers (2005–2010),[4] and a director of the Ireland Funds.

Early life

O'Reilly was born, the eldest of triplets, and fourth of six children, in 1966, in Dublin, and brought up Fox Chapel, Pittsburgh, USA (1971 - 1980), when his father was CEO of H.J. Heinz Inc, and then in Dublin Ireland.[5] After a year at Harrow School in London in 1981[5] he completed school at Clongowes Wood,[6] a Jesuit private school in a historic house near one of the then main family homes, Castlemartin in Kildare, Ireland (which was bought by billionaire John Malone of Liberty Media in December 2014).

After taking his Irish Leaving Certificate exam in 1985, he went to London, taking a summer job in advertising agency Doyle Dane Bernbach[6] (now part of DDB Needham), and worked there for around two years. He then attended Georgetown University School of Business but interrupted his studies to work as a stockbroker in First Securities in Hong Kong and London, before finishing his degree at Georgetown with honours.[6]

Career

Starclub, Inc.

In September 2015, he joined as Chief Marketing Officer of Starclub, Inc., an LA-headquartered next generation entertainment, content and technology company which uses patented technology to allow celebrities and global brands to uniquely manage and monetise their social media channels, while enhancing the consumer experience for their legion of followers. Starclub was founded by German internet and technology entrepreneur, Bernhard Fritsch[1] , who previously launched the only patented and commercially viable platform for the secure retail distribution of digital media via a company called MCY, which was sold to Steve Jobs at Apple Inc. in 2000, and was latterly re-branded as iTunes.

The Agency Group career

In 2013, O’Reilly was appointed Group CEO of The Agency Group Limited – one of the world’s leading music agencies. Representing a roster of over 2,500 artists, the roster includes some of the most recognizable names in the music industry, including, The Black Keys, Deep Purple, Guns N' Roses, Dolly Parton, Ringo Starr, Motörhead, Paramore, Jungle, Nickelback, Stromae, The Kills, Natalia Jiminez, Merle Haggard, Alice Cooper, Moby, Rush and many more. O’Reilly sold The Agency Group to United Talent Agency, LLC - one of the premier talent representation agencies based in Beverly Hills - in August 2015.

INM

In 1993, O'Reilly was hired by the public company led by his father, Independent News and Media plc (INM), by then already the largest group in Ireland and worked on the Independent Directory and then in other areas. He was appointed CEO of the Irish operations of INM in 1999 and oversaw the move of the company's printing operations to Citywest Business Park in 2000.[7] He was additionally made Group chief operating officer in December 2001[4] and appointed to the board in 2004. He was Chairman of APN News & Media in Australia from 2008 - 2012, in which INM held a controlling stake.

On Friday 13 March 2009, INM announced the promotion of Gavin O'Reilly to Group CEO. On 19 April 2012, he stepped down as chief executive of Independent News & Media, ending 39 years of direct control by his family of Ireland's largest media group.

Other roles

He is non-executive chairman of Dromoland Castle, the leading 5-Star luxury Castle resort in County Clare, Ireland. O’Reilly is non-executive Chairman of BM Polyco, one of Europe’s largest technical glove companies with market leading positions in the Industrial, Medical and Consumer hand protection sectors, and non-executive Chairman of Red Flag Consulting which specialises in Strategic Communications, Government & Public Affairs, Crisis Communications and Regulatory Engagement across Europe. He is a Trustee of the O'Reilly Foundation and Vice-President of United Europe.[8]

In 2005, he was elected President of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN).[9] O’Reilly orchestrated the merger of WAN with IFRA in 2009 to form the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, and he was elected as the first President of the merged association, to hold office until 30 June 2011.[10] He serves as an Honorary Member of the Executive Committee.[11]

He is also the former Chairman of the National Newspapers of Ireland, former Chairman of APN News & Media (Australia), a former director of Norkom Technologies, former director of TVC PLC, an investment holding company, a former director of Jagran Prakashan (India) (one of India’s largest media companies), a former director of Ashford Castle resort, a former director of the Irish Heart Foundation, and a former director of Barretstown Gang Camp.

Personal life

O'Reilly married model and former James Bond-girl and Indiana Jones actress Alison Doody on 25 June 1994, at the then family residence Castlemartin, with 560 guests present. Making their home at Bartra House, a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) home overlooking the sea in Dalkey, Ireland purchased in 1996, with neighbours including singer Enya and U2’s The Edge and Bono, the marriage produced two daughters (Alanna born 1996; Lauren born 1998). They divorced in 2006.[5]

He married Danish-national, Christina Grimm in December 2012 in London, with whom he has 2 children (Carl Lucas born 2007; Carolina born 2011). He lives in Los Angeles.
