Heather Keeler is an American politician and assistant director of Multicultural Recruitment at North Dakota State University. She is an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe and a Democratic–Farmer–Labor member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from District 4A.

Early life and education

Keeler grew up on her tribal homeland in South Dakota. As her mother worked for the state, she mostly lived in Fort Pierre. Keeler moved to the Fargo–Moorhead area while attending Minnesota State University for her Bachelor of Science degree in project management and Master's degree in educational leadership.[1]

Career

After graduating, Keeler worked at North Dakota State University as an assistant director of multicultural recruitment and as a volunteer in the Moorhead school district. While working with the school district, she served on the school system’s human rights advisory committee and Moorhead’s Human Rights Commission.[1] In March 2020, Keeler announced she would run as a Democrat for District 4A after Ben Lien announced he would not run for reelection.[2] She was endorsed by the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party in May.[3]

In the November election, Keeler defeated Republican nominee Edwin Hahn with 57% of the vote.[4] She was assigned to various committees, including Vice Chair of the Preventing Homelessness Division, Education Policy, Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy, and Higher Education Finance and Policy.[5]

Personal life

Keeler has two children.[6]
