Smokeless village
The (NEDCAP) Director, S.C. Sekhar has said that non-conventional energy sources like biogas and solar energy are very useful. At an awareness camp held at Bysanivaripalle village in Kurabalakota mandal by the district NEDCAP, he said kerosene, firewood, cow dung and coal when burnt, emitted smoke, which affected lungs. But biogas, solar energy and LPG were harmless. The TTD had been cooking on solar cooker and feeding 30,000 persons everyday. At Rishivalley School, everyday, 1000 students were given food cooked by use of solar energy.
In Chittoor district, for the first time at Bysanivaripalle, biogas plants and solar cookers were being used by all families and the village had become smokeless.
The NEDCAP Chittoor district, manager C.B. Jageeswar Reddy, said that Bysanivaripalle consisted of 36 families. In 1985 and 1986, a biogas plant was installed and then 22 more families had equipped their kitchens with biogas plants. Those who had no biogas plants, were given solar cookers. Each solar cooker costs Rs. 6,250 and the Central Government gave Rs. 2,250 as subsidy.
