Luis Garisto

Luis Garisto Pan (born 3 December 1945 in Montevideo) is a current Uruguayan football (soccer) coach who has had a professional career as both player and head coach.

Career

Luis Garisto (el loco) began his professional career in 1960 with Uruguayn club Defensor, known today as Defensor Sporting, he was transferred to Club Independiente of Argentina in Buenos Aires. He played there for several years, participating in all 5 consequtive championships with his club, 3 Libertadores cups, and 2 world club championships. Subsequently he was transfer to Penarol of Montevideo Uruguay, as a Captain of this squad they obtained 2 championships. Then went to Club Cobreloa in Chile. With this club he gained the B and A division consequtively and other several international cups such as Libertadores de America Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. In 1973 he signed with the Chilean club Cobreloa and played for the Uruguayan Squad in the World Cup in Germany in 1974. Luis Garisto Pan also comes from a family of reputable futbollers. His grand father Jose Pan, his uncle Carlos Pan, and Julio Cesar Pan were avid futbollers, Julio Cesar played in Penarol, all his cousins, Julio Cesar Jr., Waldemar, and Luis Cesar Garcia Pan particularly the last one was considered one of the best of all cousins, from Luis Garisto's set of family futbollers. He played in Colon, Defensor Sporting, Toronto Italian, Toronto Calabria and Toronto Genoa, and for 13 years was the higher scorer of the Toronto league. He is the only medical doctor from this family so far. The Pan family came originally from Spain, settling in Montevideos neighborhood of la comercial.

After the fracture leg of his team mate and best friend Fernando Morena by Ray Baarts, Luis blow to the throat of Australian international Ray Baartz by Garisto in a friendly fixture at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1974 prematurely ended Baartz's playing career. Then the Captain of the squad, Luis made sure, his players were protected. During his tenancy Penarol were behind on salaries, he made sure all but him got paid; in protest he trained on separate grounds till such time the Team paid everyone.

As a coach he has worked in several clubs such as Peñarol, Chacarita Juniors, Banfield, Argentinos Juniors, Estudiantes de la Plata, Cobreloa, Club Atlas and Deportivo Toluca F.C.. Currently Garisto is the head coach of Central Espanol in Uruguay. At present he resides in the City of Buenos Aires in Argentina.He is father to a proud daughter who is a psychiatrist.
