Matthew Hughes is a Canadian middle- and long-distance runner. He is the current Canadian record holder for men in the steeplechase, a record which he set at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.[1] After breaking the 28-year-old record Hughes said "With a lap to go I knew I was on pace for [the Canadian record]. I tried to stay with the Kenyan pack and fight all the way. It was a huge relief when I saw the time come up on the board."[1]

Hughes is a member of the Bowerman Track Club, a Nike sponsored training group based out of Portland, Oregon coached by Jerry Shumacher. [2]

Hughes competed in the NCAA for the University of Louisville where he was a two-time NCAA champion in the 3000m steeplechase. [3]

In July 2016, he was named to Canada's Olympic team.[4]
