For other uses, see premise

The premise of a film or screenplay is the fundamental concept that drives the plot.

Most premises can be expressed very simply. For example: Othello - Unchecked jealousy leads to death; Titanic - Love conquers all, physically and spiritually; The Silence of the Lambs - Courage destroys evil. However, a premise is usually written to be as long as a paragraph.
