The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run at Ascot over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is now scheduled to take place each year in October. As of 2011, it is run on Champions Day as the final race of the mile category of the British Champions Series. Traditionally, it was run in September.
The event was established in 1955, and it was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II. For several years before its launch there had been a similar race at Ascot called the Knights Royal Stakes. The first three winners of the "QEII" were all trained in France.
When the present system of race grading was introduced in 1971, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes was classed at Group 2 level. It was promoted to its current status, Group 1, in 1987. For much of its history the event was not commercially sponsored, but in recent years it has been backed by NetJets, Barclays and Sony.
The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes became part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series in 2008. The winner of the race now earns an automatic invitation to compete in the same year's Breeders' Cup Mile. [1]
