Reggello is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany, located about 25 kilometres (16 miles) southeast of Florence.

History

In 1966, seven people were killed and a neighborhood of Reggello was destroyed by a landslide triggered by the same rains that also flooded Florence.

Geography

The municipality borders with Castel San Niccolò (AR), Castelfranco di Sopra (AR), Figline Valdarno, Incisa in Val d'Arno, Montemignaio (AR), Pelago, Pian di Scò (AR) and Rignano sull'Arno. It counts the hamlets (frazioni) of Cancelli, Canova, Cascia, Caselli, Ciliegi, Donnini, Leccio, Matassino, Montanino, Pietrapiana, Pontifogno, Prulli, Saltino, San Clemente, San Donato in Fronzano, Sant'Ellero, Tosi, Vaggio and Vallombrosa.

Main sights

The most famous point of interest is the Abbey of Vallombrosa, located in the famous Vallombrosa forest, 10 km (6 mi) from the town centre.

Another important sight is the Castle of Sammezzano, located near Leccio, that is a palazzo notable for its Moorish Revival architectural style.

Sport

The local football team is called S.S. Resco Reggello, now playing in Promozione division.
