Siboniso Armstrong Duma is a South African politician who is the provincial chairperson of the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal, having been elected in 2022. He has served in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature since 2014. Duma is the currently the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. He had previously served as the chair of chairs in the provincial legislature.

Political career

Duma was the deputy chairperson of the ANC's George Mbhele branch on the Lower South Coast between 2004 and 2006.[1] He is the former deputy provincial chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal. In 2014 Duma was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature as an ANC representative. He was re-elected to another term in the provincial legislature in 2019. Duma served as the legislature's chair of chairs.[2]

ANC Provincial Chairperson

In May 2022, Duma was mentioned as a possible candidate for provincial chairperson of the ANC.[3] In early-July 2022,the ANC's John Mchunu branch in eThekwini formally nominated Duma to contest the position of provincial chairperson against incumbent Sihle Zikalala at the ANC's provincial elective conference.[1] The ANC in eThekwini endorsed Duma's campaign for provincial chairperson.[4] Duma headed the "Taliban" faction, a group of candidates sympathetic to former party president Jacob Zuma.[5] At the provincial conference on 23 July 2022, Duma handedly defeated Zikalala in the election for provincial chairperson as candidates linked to the "Taliban" faction made a clean sweep of all the provincial leadership positions contested at the conference.[6][7][8] Duma's election was described as a "big blow" to current party president Cyril Ramaphosa's re-election campaign ahead of the party's 55th National Conference to be held in December 2022.[9]

Provincial government

After his election, Duma said that Zikalala won't be removed as premier of the province anytime soon.[10] Nonetheless, Zikalala resigned as premier on 5 August 2022 and was replaced by Finance MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube. On 11 August 2022, Duma was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs by Dube-Ncube.[11]
