Simon Clark is a horror novel writer from Doncaster, England. He started by writing stories for fanzines. One of these was the semiprozine Back Brain Recluse(BBR).[1] His first published collection of stories was Blood And Grit published by BBR in 1990.[2] In 1994 an editor called Nick Austin at Hodder Headline bought both Nailed By The Heart and Blood Crazy.[3] An agent agreed to represent him.[4] At this point he decided to become a full time writer.
After his seventh novel had been published in England the American publisher Leisure Books republished his first book Nailed by the Heart. Clark's first book directly for the American market was Darkness Demands. Despite this it was set in the small village English village of Skelbrooke, in South Yorkshire.[5]
One of his most notable works is the novel The Night of the Triffids. Clark says that from first reading The Day of the Triffids he thought there should be a sequel. However it was being stuck on a train in flooded countryside that finally compelled him to write it. His agent contacted the trustees of the estate of John Wyndham who agreed to the proposal.[6]
Clark has been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel, World Fantasy Award for Best Novella and British Fantasy Award. In 2001 he won the British Fantasy Award for best short story, "Goblin City Lights", and the aforementioned The Night of the Triffids. In 2011 he won the British Fantasy Award for best novella for Humpty's Bones.[7]
He is also the author of the Doctor Who novella The Dalek Factor.
Simon Clark was one of the first authors ever to have a website. It was made for him by Chris Reed of Back Brain Recluse(BBR). It has recently been updated but the original has been archived at the British Library.[8] (See External Links)
His agent is Lesley Pollinger of Pollinger Ltd

Adaptations
A Big Finish Productions audio adaptation of The Night of the Triffids written by Simon Clark was released in September 2014. It stars Sam Troughton as David Masen.[10]
Critical Reactions
Clearly marketed as a genre horror title, this crafty continuation is elegant in its construction. Clark's prose is clean, thoughtful and perfectly suited to his faux doomsday-memoir approach. Less cautionary than the original, but more literary than many books of its ilk, this is a truly enjoyable voyage. Review of The Night of the Triffids in Publishers Weekly
