Southern Baptist Educational Center is a college preparatory school located in Southaven, Mississippi. SBEC was founded by a group of Baptist ministers looking to establish a school in the Whitehaven section of Memphis, Tennessee, in 1972. Programs for kindergarten through Grade 8 began in 1973, and grades 9-12 were added the following year. The school is dually accredited SAIS and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. SBEC is also a member of the Association of Christian Schools International, the TAIS, and the TSSAA. SBEC offers distinguished academic, athletic, and fine art opportunities. The members of the class of 2011 were accepted to 30 colleges across the country and four members were National Merit Finalists. As of 2011 the school was the fourth-largest school in Greater Memphis.[1]

The 40-acre (160,000 m2) Memphis campus was utilized from 1974 until 1988, when it was sold to the Memphis City School System.
[edit] Southaven
The school campus relocated to Southaven, Mississippi, a Memphis suburb. The 67-acre (270,000 m2) campus contains facilities for grades pre-K through 12, and a complete sportsplex. The building contains approximately 100,000 square feet (10,000 m2) of instructional and support space for students. Specifically, the building contains over 40 regular classrooms, 3 computer labs, 4 science labs, a science lecture lab, a library/media center, a cafeteria, a multi-purpose room, and an area of the school designed specifically for the fine arts. The gymnasium contains locker rooms, a fully furnished weight room, and a turf room. The sportsplex contains a football stadium and track, baseball stadium, softball stadium, and a soccer field. In addition, the stadium contains two concessions buildings.
[edit] Percussion Ensemble
The percussion ensemble is a musical group composed mostly of band members but is open to all students at the school. It is directed by James Tomlinson. The group uses drums, guitars, xylophones, a gong, and etc. They have competed on a national level in Dayton, OH in the past 2 years and placed 8th and 6th in the whole country in the past competitions.
[edit] Trojan Marching Band
The SBEC band is a multi-award winning group of musicians that attend SBEC throughout the school year. The SBEC Marching Band's show for the 2011 Competition Season is entitled False Awakenings, illustrating the head Colorguard member's dream in which she experiences a wonderful place that she has never seen.
The most notable of the band's 2008 accomplishments is their victory at the Bandmasters Championship in Memphis, TN, where they placed first in Class AA, Outstanding Percussion Class AA, Outstanding General Effect Class AA, Outstanding Musical Performance Class AA, Outstanding Visual Performance Class AA, a rating of I or Superior, and ninth rank overall (defeating four Class AAA bands in the process). They also received the overall banner for the 2008 Liberty Bowl competition.
In 2009, the band declared their superiority at the competition of Northeast Mississippi, where they placed first in their class and division which was between the 2A and 3A classes. They also received The Overall Best Soloist Award for their baritone solo by Kevin McKenzie. They also placed 1st in class and division and sweeping all other captions in the small division in the Lewisburg Southern Stars Invitational (receiving 3rd place overall). At the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational, the band placed 1st in their class and division, 1st place drum major in their division, and 2nd place percussion. The band will compete at Bandmaster's Championship in the Liberty Bowl and McGavock High School in Nashville, TN.
In 2011 the band's head director, Randy Dale went on to work as an assistant director at Ole Miss. The assistant director of SBEC's marching band, Michael Berryhill was named head director.
Also in 2011, the SBEC Marching Band received numerous awards by traveling to schools around the Memphis area. On October 29, the band traveled to the Bandmasters Championship, held at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, where they received a Superior Rating, Outstanding Percussion in Class AAA, and 10th Place overall out of 37 bands. This is the first year that the SBEC Marching Band was labeled as Class AAA, and not AA.

Football- The SBEC Football team is one of the best 2a programs in the state, and has a long winning tradition. The SBEC team is currently coached by David Carter. Baseball- The SBEC Baseball program is 2a powerhouse. SBEC was the 2009 State champs and in 2010 had the best regular season record in the western division.The trojans have a large number of baseball players who have played at or are currently playing at the college level, Tyler Womack- Mississippi College, Chris Casto- Northwest CC, Josh Hopkins- Northwest CC, Christian Crawford-Southwest CC, are a few from the 2009 class. Despite being located in Mississippi, SBEC competes in Division 2, Region A of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Other members of their division are:

SBEC has two major rivals being: St. Georges and ECS.
Basketball- The Trojans have a competitive basketball program that plays in one of the best divisions in the State. The Trojans this 2010-2011 season will be coached by Mark Duggin and led by seniors Jalen Gipson, Nate Warren, & Trey Skinner.
