Steven "Steve" Stifler is a fictional character from the American Pie series of teen comedy films. He first appeared in American Pie (1999), as a partying high school student on the school's lacrosse team, in which he was portrayed by Seann William Scott. Created by Adam Herz.

Appearances

Stifler made his first cinematic appearance in the original American Pie on July 9, 1999. In American Pie, Stifler went to East Great Falls High. It is unknown how good he was academically (although he says in American Wedding that he was "always more of a 'C' student" to Cadence), but he was on the school Lacrosse team. While not part of the sex pact, Stifler plays a crucial role in the film in two ways: His post-prom party served as the setting for the film's final act. Also, he is a close friend of Jim and Oz, although engaged in a non-friendly rivalry with Finch. After Finch pays to have positive rumors about himself spread to all the girls in the school, one of these being that (Finch) won in a fist fight with Stifler (something that would seem to be impossible), Stifler reveals Finch as a geek in front of everyone by putting very strong laxative in Finch's habitual drink of mocha cappuccino. Finch, who is too uptight to use the school toilet until that time, ran to the restroom, where Stifler helpfully held the door open for him. It turned out to be the ladies' restroom, and Finch was publicly embarrassed. Stifler is also on the wrong end of the first of three sight gags throughout the film's trilogy in this movie, where he ingests beer containing semen. He then proceeds to vomit uncontrollably on a girl and in the toilet.[1]

Stifler's second appearance was in the sequel, American Pie 2 (2001). Stifler reappeared in American Pie 2, with a much larger role this time. He went to Michigan State University. Along with the main clique of the film series, Stifler helps chip in cash to rent a beach house on Lake Michigan with the rest of the group. During the summer, Stifler becomes interested in two attractive owners of the house that they were hired to paint; two female friends who Stifler mistakenly regards as lesbians, who respond to Stifler's attraction by offering to engage in varying degrees of lesbian sexual activities in front of him, Jim and Finch, but only in exchange for the guys to engage in a corresponding degree of homoerotic acts that girls enjoy. The first is Stifler grabbing Finch's buttocks, the second is Stifler and Jim kissing, and the third one would have been for Stifler to receive hand jobs from Finch and Jim, which Stifler is the only one confident enough to do. This freaks Jim and Finch out too much and they run off. This annoys Stifler, as the more the guys would have done, the more the girls would have done. At the main party at the beach house at the end of the film, the two girls arrive, telling Stifler they never said they were lesbians, and Stifler ends up in bed with them both.[2]

American Wedding (2003) marked Stifler's last appearance as of 2010. In American Wedding, Stifler's role is even larger, possibly making him the main character. Stifler is revealed to have become a high school football assistant coach; he also drives the team's bus. He drops in on Jim and Michelle's engagement party, much to Michelle's dismay. He is also implicated in an unusual Jim-plus-two-dogs foursome (which Stifler admitted to enjoying). He later competes with Finch for the heart of Cadence, Michelle's younger sister. He impersonates Finch's personality of an upright, upper class snob in order to win Cadence over, but Finch continues the triangle by replicating Stifler's outrageous frat boy image, which Cadence surprisingly enjoys just as much, if not more. Nevertheless, Stifler manages to bond with Cadence's family, and is eventually charged with holding Michelle's wedding ring. However, the dog manages to ingest the ring while in Stifler's care, and Stifler follows it until it defecates. Daniil picks up the ring (encapsulated within the feces) using a confection paper, which Cadence's mother sees and assumes it to be one of the truffles. She insists that Stifler let her have it, but knowing he could blow his chances with Cadence for good, he suddenly pops the dog dropping into his own mouth. Before the wedding, Stifler accidentally destroys the massive flower arrangement Michelle's family had ordered, resulting in Michelle and Cadence turning against him. However, Stifler redeems himself at the end of the film: using the football team as his minions, Stifler uses his own money to buy up the entire content of a nearby flower shop and has the football team successfully set up the flowers for the wedding hours before it is to occur. By doing this, Cadence eventually falls for him and invites him to have sex in the closet. Stifler accidentally has sex with Jim's grandmother, who was put in there because she was "being a bitch". At the reception, Stifler danced with Cadence. This concludes the main films in the franchise. Actor Seann William Scott joked in the DVD commentary for American Wedding that the reason why the regular cast movie franchise ended there because there was nothing more vile for Stifler to eat.[3]

In Band Camp, the audience is told that Stifler has become a pornographic movie director. This movie shows that although the jocks and other popular kids pretended to like Stifler he was not liked by anyone in high school.[4]

Characteristics

Stifler is a popular, confident, oversexed jock. He can be a bully and a prankster, but is always good natured. Stifler's parents Eric and Jeanine Stifler, are divorced, with Stifler and his brother living with their mother. In the first two movies we see that Oz is fond of Stifler and always stands up for him. Jim also likes him, but likely finds him obnoxious. He is well liked by popular kids, especially his team mates on the Lacrosse team, but is not liked at all by the less popular kids, like those at Band Camp.

During the film, Stifler is shown to associate with members of his school's lacrosse team. Through teammate and close friend Oz, Stifler has a strained but ultimately long-term friendship over the other three American Pie boys, Jim, Kevin and Finch.

Despite his obnoxious behaviour, Stifler has a definite sensitive side and is a good person. Shown in the dance off with Bear which leads to Leslie Summers designing Michelle's dress, and teaching Jim to dance (as long as Stifler could be in charge of the bachelor party and could have a dildo show) He helps Jim and Michelle's wedding become a success. Towards the end of the film, he is seen as a real friend by the other guys, so much so that he begins to not hate Finch. Finch restores the animosity by reminding him, "I did fuck your mom. Twice."

He is known to have had many sexual partners, with 23 acts of sexual intercourse and at least one act of oral sex in his freshman year of college alone ("I got laid 23 times this year and I'm not counting the hummer I got in the library stacks, baby!"). However, this could be a deliberate gag by the writers; in the scene before, a female character describes how men exaggerate the number of sexual partners.

His first emotional connection with a girl, however, was in American Wedding, with Cadence Flaherty, Michelle's younger sister. It is revealed that Stifler went on to become a pornography actor and director in American Pie: Band Camp, with Cadence as his star.

Steve is a popular, attractive and confident student, but a bit of a bully, and often insensitive. Although a troublemaker, Stifler's pranks are usually clever, and seldom harmful.

Family

At the start of The Naked Mile Steve Stifler is introduced by his cousin Erik as one of the legendary Stifler boys (the other one being Steve's brother Matt, and their other cousin Dwight). The only part we see of Steve in this movie is his behind, which he shows on a photo hanging in Erik's room.[5]

Stifler is not mentioned or seen in Beta House although his two cousins, Erik and Dwight -who starred in The Naked Mile- star again.[6]

Stifler is not mentioned or seen in The Book of Love although his cousin, Scott Stifler appeared. Stifler's name appears as one of the names on "The Bible" borrowing card.[7]

Matt Stifler

Steve's younger brother, whose first name was not revealed in the first two films, is Matt Stifler. Although a minor character in the first two films (and not mentioned in the third), he was the main character of Band Camp. Evidently, he looks up to his older brother as a role model, and hopes to follow in his footsteps. After disrupting the band's performance at the East Great Falls High School graduation, he is punished by being sent to Tall Oaks Band Camp. After discovering no one in the Band Camp really liked his brother and no one considered him a friend, he realized he would be the same if he kept up the act. He changed his ways and is assumed to now be a great friend to the entire band. He also fell in love with the Drum Major Elyse. He has also inherited the family's sex drive, claiming to have had sex with 3 college cheerleaders in one week, during his spring break.

Jeanine Stifler

Stifler's mom is Jeanine Stifler. The mother of Steve and Matt. She is fairly wealthy (she once owned a lake house but then sold it to travel) and is called a MILF in American Pie. A running joke in the original trilogy is that she has sex with Paul Finch in the movies American Pie, American Pie 2 and American Wedding.

Erik Stifler

Erik Stifler, presumably an only child, is the cousin of Steve, Matt, Scott and Dwight. Unlike his four cousins, he is more concerned with the well-being of others rather than looking for women to fool around with or other guys to insult. Because of this, many have questioned his place in the Stifler clan (i.e. one person told him in The Naked Mile, "If you were a real Stifler, you'd have nailed Tracy by now."). In spite of all this, Erik seems to look up to his older cousin Dwight as a role model. Presently, he is a member of the Beta House fraternity with his girlfriend, Ashley, cousin Dwight, and best friend Mike "Cooze" Coozeman.

Harry Stifler

Harry Stifler is Erik's father. He is married, but was temporarily separated from his wife while Erik was three (during those two weeks, he slept with ten women, including the mother of Erik's friend, Cooze). He frequently complains about his son not living up to the Stifler name with statements such as "Stifler's don't fake sick to pull dick, they cut class to get ass." Erik responds with "I know, that's on our family crest." He proves to be a hypocrite, though, when he is seen pleasing himself with the same dumpster porn that Erik was watching.

Marisa Stifler

Mrs. Marisa Drubner Stifler is Erik's mother and Harry's wife.

Grandma Stifler

Grandma Stifler is the mother of Harry, grandmother of Steve, Matt, Erik, Dwight and Scott. She died of a heart attack when Erik accidentally ejaculated on her during the beginning scene of Naked Mile.

Dwight Stifler

Dwight Stifler is the cousin of Erik, Scott, Steve and Matt Stifler. Dwight appears to be the de facto head of Beta House, as he presides over its many parties and organizes fraternity initiation (done by completing a set of tasks on a "pledge board"). Although Dwight exhibits the characteristic sex drive of the Stifler name, he is not as prone to insulting as are Steve and Matt and especially Scott (with the exception of those he has a grudge against, chiefly midgets and geeks)

Scott Stifler

Scott is the Stifler that appeared in the film American Pie: Book of Love and was portrayed by John Patrick Jordan. He is the youngest Stifler (still in high school in The Book of Love). This film shows a more familiar Stifler to that of the first four films. Towards the end of the movie, however, he shows his sensitive side to one of his schoolmates Imogen, but later grabbed her breast, which he said was only a reflex.
