Suspiria is an upcoming horror film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by David Kajganich. It is a remake[2] of the 1977 film Suspiria, and stars Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth, and Tilda Swinton.[3] Jessica Harper, the lead actress of the original film, will also appear as a different character.[4]

Premise

A young American aspiring dancer (Dakota Johnson) begins attending a prestigious dance academy, only to unravel the academy’s dark and sinister secrets.

Conception

A remake of Suspiria (1977) was originally announced in 2008 by director David Gordon Green, who co-wrote the script with his sound designer.[5][6] Green cast Isabelle Huppert and Janet McTeer in the project, as well as Isabelle Fuhrman.[7] However, according to Green, conflicts with the studio financing the production resulted in the film being scrapped.[7]

In September 2015, Luca Guadagnino announced at the 72nd Venice Film Festival[8] his plans to direct a remake of Dario Argento's Suspiria with the four main actors of his film A Bigger Splash (2015), which premiered at the festival. Guadagnino revealed that his version will be set in Berlin circa 1977, the release year of the original film, and focus on “the concept of motherhood and about the uncompromising force of motherhood.”[9][10] On November 23, 2015, Guadagnino confirmed[11] that Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson had been cast in the film and that shooting was scheduled to begin in August 2016, with release set for 2017.[12][13] In October 2016, Chloë Grace Moretz and Mia Goth were cast in supporting parts.[13][14][15] alongside Sylvie Testud, Angela Winkler, Małgosia Bela and Lutz Ebersdorf.[16][15]

Jessica Harper, who played Suzy Bannion in the original film, also joined the cast.[4] The new screenplay was written by David Kajganich.[13] Radiohead singer Thom Yorke composed the film's score.[17]

Filming

The film began shooting in Italy in October 2016, with actresses Tilda Swinton, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Mia Goth being seen while filming in Varese.[18][19]

The main location in Varese is the 'Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori'[20] which is supposed to be the Dance Academy (central point of the original movie). Another confirmed location, also in Varese, is Palazzo Estense and its famous gardens.[21]

The film finished shooting on March 10, 2017[22] in Berlin.[23][24]
