The Post was created in 1917 and continues up to today[edit]

Hello the lead in this article states that this post was only created in 1985 actually that information is incorrect this post has existed continuously since 1917 with a succession of ACNS's running from that date plus the creation of other ACNS's dealing in specific areas I am drafting the article here: User:Navops47/draft/ACNS, the Vice Chief Naval Staff (1941-1984) was the more senior post evident by holders being Vice Admirals as opposed to Rear Admirals. If there are no objections I will update this article when I have finished adding sources because at the moment it does not give the complete picture.--Navops47 (talk) 13:39, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder whether there is a clue to the source of the problem in the fact that the offending sentence refers to "ACAS", not "ACNS"; it was apparently copied from Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (but I don't know whether the date is accurate there). --David Biddulph (talk) 13:54, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I see what you mean my sources both book and websites sources confirm the ACNS was firstly responsible for Policy from inception until 1940 (although that was not used in their title) until much later. The post was divided up during world war two into specialized areas due to that situation one flag officer could not handle all that alone in 1946 the function returns to one post again responsible for policy though not stated in title until 1966 when it is referred to ACNS Policy that continues until 1984 we then go back to the single title until 2012 when policy is added again. Additional ACNS's were first created as I said during WW2 they resurface again in 1953 with ACNS Warfare, followed by ACNS Operations and then Operations and Air and then ACNS Operational Requirements and have come back again and will add them. However the ACNS responsible for Policy continues. Its a bit of a minefield but I think I'm piecing it together as coherently as possible. The abolition of VADM post Vice Chief is yet another down sizing of the RN. The senior staff officers in order of precedence were Deputy Chief Naval Staff, then Vice Chief Naval Staff (although temporarily elevated to that of DCNS during WW2 when that post ceases 1941 to 1946), then Assistant Chief Naval Staff.--Navops47 (talk) 14:47, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting that List of senior officers of the Royal Navy#Vice Chiefs of the Naval Staff says that VCNS reported to DCNS from 1947 until 1984, yet from 53-54 DCNS was a rear-admiral and VCNS was a vice-admiral. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:24, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Have now updated the article as best as I could and added over 40+ citations I will now work on the other DCNS and VCNS drafts other editors are welcome to improve further.--Navops47 (talk) 06:51, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
