End date[edit]

Regarding the end date for the AFWV – 'The Federation existed until 1974', taken from the NLA Guide to Records^[1] – the Guide states 'Although the Federation continued to exist until at least 1974, its functions were largely superseded by the establishment of the Women's Electoral Lobby in 1972.' The EWL states^[2] 'The AFWV itself disbanded in 1982' and notes a president as late as 1978 (the source for that being the Australian Women's Register). The Australian Women’s Register states 1982 and gives as its source Marian Sawer’s 1992 book Women's Political History - A Guide to Sources (National Museum of Australia). Perhaps the establishment of the WEL in 1972 has muddied the waters here about the actual date of cessation of the AFWV? Helouise (talk) 03:25, 15 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Relationship to The Dawn[edit]

The sources clearly state that The Dawn is the "official organ" (i.e. publication) of the AFWV but The Dawn predates the organisation by about 40 years. I've personally had a look at the papers of the AFWV in the National Library manuscripts collection (as cited in the article), specifically:

Box 1, Folder 8 of MS2818, containing "Letters (1935-52) copy of minutes of inaugural meeting 1920 relating to newspaper The Dawn".

However, this did not give insight into the beginning of the relationship, as the papers/clippings in that folder were all about the latter days of it.

I think the point was not that Lawson's The Dawn started 40 years before it started, but that it ended years before AFWV started. This would suggest that we're dealing with an unrelated publication of the same name, in which case this article needs to not link to the Lawson publication.
