Recent minor edit[edit]

Updated population & median property value. On my browser the citations I've added to the info box show up at the bottom as kind of screwy - perhaps because of the length of the URL string? One more thing - I should declare this happens to be my home suburb. Not sure whether this should prevent me from editing. Personally - I don't see an issue, considering that the article in its present form is basically descriptive and uncontroversial; others may see it differently.--Glen Dillon (talk) 07:39, 24 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No worries at all - I got mine to featured status about 18 months back. Perth suburbs are woefully neglected for the most part as a topic, so if you see any scope to improve them, you're unlikely to find much contest from anybody. I used to live in Bateman for a few months a very long time ago, when I first arrived in the country - it was a migrant hostel called Noalimba in the northeast of the suburb. Interesting you should mention that. I feel Noalimba deserves a section in the article. It is etched in the memory of many thousands of 'new' west aussies who migrated here - esp. from UK and Northern Ireland from 1968 onward - it was the first place they slept after arriving in Perth by ship or plane. You prob. know it eventually became an accomodation facility for Dept of Sport and Recreation around 1980 (or thereabouts). Apart from migrants, thousands of kids from rural WA stayed there while on trips to Perth for Country Week sports. Back in 2003 - just before the whole place was demolished, state govt's Landcorp did a comprehensive photographic 'snapshot' for historical archiving purposes. They also commissioned a sculptor to produce some works now located at the entrance to the new estate. Some of the new sculptures incorporate writings from the diaries of the migrants detailing their first impressions of Perth. It may even make an interesting separate article if suitable reliable sources are available for it. I stayed there in 1984 btw... it had already become primarily a sport housing area (I remember a football team from Wyalkatchem and a Japanese women's hockey team among others) but it still accommodated a fair number of mostly British migrants.
