Problems with tone[edit]

This article is still like a hagiography, and apparently takes a lot of its information from the published biography of the subject, one which makes no bones about being written to praise him. Could we please get a more neutral tone and some more references from outside his church? --Orange Mike | Talk 00:14, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I see. I will go looking. Elmmapleoakpine (talk) 00:22, 28 January 2010 (UTC). Before I go looking I just want to make sure you see that two of the references are from separate newspaper articles in the Roanoke Times. In fact with regard to your point about the biography it is only one of 6 references in the article so far. Elmmapleoakpine (talk) 00:31, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Those articles from the Times are still pretty darned hagiographic. Is there nothing from a more out-of-town source? We all have a tendency to cherish our local "saints" because we see their work in context.--Orange Mike | Talk 15:17, 28 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Questions About The Tags Added to the Article[edit]

I am a bit confused by the tags. I am most concerned about the noteability tag as the subject of the article is very well known in the Southern Appalachian region and has had a book written about his life. Elmmapleoakpine (talk) 00:17, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:BIO for detailed explanation of what constitutes "notable" in a Wikipedia context (in brief: a person is presumed to be notable if he or she has been the subject of published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject). The one book is from a Presbyterian press, and the article tends to reference praise of the subject by his own denominational body, not a reliable source of impartial information. Do you have citations to secular histories of the region that reference him and his work, for example? --Orange Mike | Talk 00:59, 26 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
