Merge discussion

I have just reverted an undiscussed blank redirect of a GA-class article in Vortigaunt, likely by an inexperienced editor. The reason provided was that there is no commentary on that article, which is untrue as there is adequate referencing throughout the page. But since concerns are raised about notability, I think it warrants a merge discussion moving forward. The question though would be, whether there are more independent reliable sources out in the wild (i.e. searching on Google Books or Google Scholar) which discuss the character in significant detail, and whether it warrants a standalone article? While I understand that standards on Wikipedia may have been lower when it was first made GA more then a decade, I find it implausible that no new sources which discuss this topic have emerged in the years since.

If consensus is that the topic doesn't meet the presumption standards of a standalone article, then please propose to where the appropriate merge target would be, and to what extent is the content salvageable even for a list article. There is a tentative target in Characters of Half-Life, but should it be redirected to a section in the series article which talks about in-universe elements? Support merge unless someone can come up with further reception on the Vortigaunts that merits a standalone article. Right now it is extremely weak. Characters of Half-Life seems like the correct target for it. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 11:36, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Oppose Why mess with a GA? —¿philoserf? (talk) 16:06, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
It was made a GA more than 10 years ago, standards have changed massively since then. ZXCVBNM (TALK) 01:56, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Oppose This subject definitely seems to be notable enough to merit it’s own article, and even if it isn’t an article listing characters seems inappropriate for an entire species. DogsRNice (talk) 17:32, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Concur When I took a look at the list that would receive the merge, it did not seem a match at all; individual characters. A better editor than I might find a way to extend the list. I do no not know. But I still think it is moot. We do not tear down good articles without exceptional cause. —¿philoserf? (talk) 17:57, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
Support The reception section is too short to warrant its own article. GeeJay24 (talk) 00:49, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Oppose The Vortigaunt article seems to be pretty long with a lot of information that is well referenced. I don't think that compressing it down into a section in this article would be any better. ― Levi_OPTalk 15:53, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Breen

although a lot of characters were introduced in HL2, the player meets Dr. Breen during HL: Decay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.213.7.119 (talk) 17:31, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Spelling of dog

a quick check of the HL Wiki reveals it is spelled Dog and not D0g. Alternate spelling may include DØg or dØg, quick reference->[[1]]

Phail

Blue Shift came before Decay. Anyone want to rewrite the Rosenberg section to correct this little quirk? Montaced (talk) 01:45, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Eli Vance and Issac Kleiner Was Not Introduced in Half-Life 2

According to the article, it said that Dr. Eli Vance and Dr. Issac Kleiner was introduced in Half-Life's successor, Half-Life 2. That, however is not true. In the original game, Gordon Freeman (the protagonist) meets with Vance and Kleiner right in the beginning of the game, and a few minutes after. Mohamed Boutaleb | talk 15:54, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

This is a true thing as Valve has even stated he is met by Gordon when the machinery almost goes critical before Gordon goes into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer. InfernusIsHiding-Talk 15:56, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
No, those characters were introduced in Half-Life 2. They do not appear as such in Half-Life and are not named. This is something called retroactive continuity but from the real life point of view they first appear in Half-Life 2. Mezigue (talk) 21:30, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Like I said, Valve STATED that Eli was the scientist that is the first to talk to Gordon after he leaves the Anti-Mass Spectrometer. He was introduced, however due to the limitations of the game's engine at the time, he was not able to be given his own files, similar to Barney Calhoun in the main Half-Life game. He was however, given his own voice files and got his own character files later in the Black Mesa source game. InfernusIsHiding-Talk 15:36, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

notability

Is this page for real? There's not a single acceptable reference on this page. If there's no reason to believe that these characters are notable outside of people who are interested in the game itself, this page should be deleted. NewkirkPlaza (talk) 03:08, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Your statement makes no sense. There are bluelinked subarticles for several of the characters, and those articles have references. So clearly, while this list article is problematic, the statement that there's no notability fails a basic examination of the subarticles. At the very least, a list of characters who have their own articles could easily be built for Half-Life, by extracting references from those articles. So, while this article certainly is in poor shape (no refs) it isn't the same as there being no notability. -- 65.94.42.219 (talk) 07:36, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

G-man

Resolved

What happened to the G-man page? I can't seem to find any deletion or merge discussion so it seems like his page got turned into a redirect without a proper discussion. 104.7.152.180 (talk) 04:19, 2 March 2024 (UTC)

It was substantially lacking in any form of significant coverage. I can't speak on if G-Man may or may not having something since I'm not too involved with Half-Life, but given the state the article was in when it was redirected, it seems to have been a sensible decision per policy. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 21:09, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
