Article Quality Evaluation:

The Charles Goodsell wikipedia article is four sentences long and contains only one source, dated March 16th, 1994. It also contains a warning banner stating that the article needs additional citations. Its overall structure is vague and includes little information about Charles Goodsell’s life, education, or significance. Multiple published works are listed, however none of them have corresponding articles and thus their importance is unclear. Additionally there is only one external link provided at the end of the article. Because this article lacks depth, we will primarily focus on increasing its breadth and establishing its legitimacy as an encyclopedia article. To correct this, we have researched Goodsell’s life and education, read a selection of his published work, and explored his other contributions such as a collection of his architecturally themed photography. By doing so, it is our intent to expand upon the limited information about Goodsell’s contributions to, and his role within, the field of Public Administration. Furthermore, through our extensive research, we hope to offer a substantial foundation for our contributions to this article. Finally, by compiling these many and varied resources, we hope to provide an accurate, accessible, and unbiased biographic article.

Selected Works

Mission Mystique: Belief Systems in Public Agencies[edit]

In Goodsell’s 2011 book, he examines six United States public agencies, including the US National Park Service, the US National Weather Service, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Peace Corps, among others[1]. The concept of the book is to define what makes an agency “good” or reputable. He concludes that those who do good work in public agencies are, in part, motivated by a strong sense of mission, or the belief that they are doing important work.

The American statehouse: Interpreting democracy's temples[edit]

In this book, Goodsell reviews all fifty United States’ capitals and their buildings[2]. He uses three concepts to interpret government architecture in the social sense: the search for political values in the buildings, the effects of the building on behavior, and the impression the buildings make on society. Additionally, all of the photographs used in the book were taken by Goodsell[2].

''Architecture as a Setting for Governance''[edit]

In this article for the Journal of Architectural & Planning Research,[3] Goodsell introduces the overarching subject of the volume’s articles: examining connections between architecture of political purpose and governance. He notes three basic connections: the literal sense of housing governance, the symbolic sense or expressive aspect of architecture, and the behavioral effect of political architecture.

''The Public Administrator as Artisan''[edit]

In this article written for the Public Administration Review,[4] Goodsell states the foundations of his approach to examining the values of public administrators. His primary point is to explore the “artful” aspect of public administration. He draws on aesthetic philosophy to provide guidance for workers who often feel insignificant in regards to influencing their public mission.

''Administration as Ritual''[edit]

In this article for the Public Administration Review,[5] Goodsell examines the qualities of ritualistic behavior and formulates three types of administrative ritual: explicit rites, formalistic processes, and expressive programs.

Peer Review[edit]

Great job on covering Goodsell's early life/education. Also, providing a list of all of his work/contributions is a great addition to this article. One thing that I would add to the "Early Life and Education" section is providing a hyperlink to " V.O. Key Jr" so readers of the article may have a little more knowledge of who he is. One thing I think should be expanded is the section "Academic Career". I feel like his contributions to each of his professional jobs needs to be briefly expanded. Maybe explain what how he contributed to his employers and how he impacted Public Administration through his career. Overall, this article did a good job in covering Charles Goodsell. Peer Review[edit]

Comprehensiveness A. The lead section does give a useful overview of the main topic which is Charles Goodsell. I feel like it could be a little more in depth though. -The Introduction, Early life and Education, Academic career, Awards, and Public Administration author. -I do believe they fully cover the material needed to inform people about this person, but I also think, as I stated earlier that there could be a little more information added to each section. -Yes, there are sources as well as references to back up there information. B. Yes, this article focuses on a clear topic, which is Charles Goodsell. It includes references from academic journals, so yes it does include scholarly support. Since the topic here is a person, not a term there isn’t really a lot of perspectives you can have, just fatcs. They do a good job of providing those facts as perspective yes. No competing points of view because it is a person. Sourcing -As far as I can see all claims seem to be supported with proper references when appropriate. -The article has a sufficient amount of references to support the articles claims. -Yes, they do follow the form requested by the professor. neutrality -The article has a very neutral viewpoint and consist of facts about this person. It definitely avoids making wild assumptions and sticks to facts withh references to support. Readability A. The entry is written well, in a manner that is easy to read and navigate. -Sentences are carefully crafted, but could be a little more clear. -The entry eems to have been proofread and free of typos. B. The Paragraphs are well structured and because the topic is a person there is a clear focus on Charles Goodsell himself. -The Article has appropriate section headings on all sections as well as correct links. Open Ended 1 The article is very organized and well thought out. It is easy to get a grasp on who Charles Goodsell is for the most part as well as to look up any of his works or publications. Open Ended 2 A few improvement I’d like to see is a little more information on each of the sections. They do a good job of summing it up, but if possible going a little more in depth about his life wouldn’t be a bad thing. Also The “Academic career” section title could be a little misleading. I didn’t necessarily know it was going to be about his teaching career when I read the title.

Peer Review[edit]

Overall the team did a good job contributing to the article. It was clear and easy to understand on what they are going to contribute. It had reliable sources but one thing I would like to state is to expand and go into a little more in depth on the Education and Academic Career section. It was supported and state where they would add sources. It does have a variety of sources that they were going to use. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mel29g (talkcontribs) 20:27, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
