Parliamentary Religious First?[edit]

Noting he was a lifelong member of the Moravian Church, I wonder if he is claimable as the first British Moravian MP, who was victor at a General Election, or did he have predecessors? Moravianism was particularly active in Yorkshire and Lancashire (counties I have not lived in) in the 18th/19th centuries.Cloptonson (talk) 06:27, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

He almost certainly was the first Moravian MP; it was noted as a curiosity by a contemporary newspaper in the 1840s that he was a Moravian (I believe they said the only Moravian MP) and his frequent chairing of Nonconformist meetings was probably favoured by his not being an adherent of any of the main strands. However, he probably isn't claimable as a first in Wikipedia, unless a source can be found which has already done the 'original research' to show that nobody elected 1832 or earlier was a Moravian.

If you haven't lived in either Yorkshire or Lancashire, then you don't know what you have missed; but CH was from south of the Tame and hence (in those days) actually a Cheshire lad. The Moravian settlement at Fairfield (Droylsden, Lancashire) with which Hindley was associated was founded in 1785 as a daughter settlement of that at Fulneck (Pudsey, Yorkshire), but the original intention had been to form a settlement at Stalybridge (I believe the tale is that deeds were about to be signed when the landowner died) and the Hindleys had put down roots there.Rjccumbria (talk) 22:02, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Checking my recollections against the British Newspaper Archive; when Hindley was first elected in 1835, various provincial papers (the ones visible in the BNA are not local to Ashton-u-L: Bristol Mirror, Brighton Gazette, Sherborne Mercury) carried a paragraph saying he was the first and only Moravian to be elected , so the claim is referenceable. However, the paragraph appears in the page given over to snippets of interesting facts; which is a stronger guarantee of the paragraph being interesting than of it being factually correct.Rjccumbria (talk) 00:26, 1 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
