Untitled[edit]

Sci. Am. vol. 116 p. 573 identifies Charles's parents and Henry and Mary Goodrich Van Hise, good evidence that it is a mistake to shorten William Henry Van Hise to William, and providing a norm suggesting that Mary's maiden name Goodrich be retained. History of Dane County: Biographical and Genealogical, vol. 1 p. 925 explains that Henry "was a farmer in early life, but later became a merchant," important for an accurate perspective because Henry took up his mercantile career about 1865 when Charles was young (about 8); it also tells that Charles grew up with four sisters and two brothers. I leave it to more experienced contributors to weave additional facts and sources into the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.101.164.181 (talk) 03:09, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Political activities[edit]

I've happened by chance across a book that discusses Van Hise in relation to political figures of the day, especially La Follette: Wisconsin, An Experiment in Democracy, by Frederic Clemson Howe. See https://books.google.com/books?id=XPcqAAAAMAAJ. It should be explored and material added here about that dimension of Van Hise's career. I doubt that I will have a chance to come back to this, so I hope someone else can pick up on it. Poihths (talk) 13:38, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
