Comments[edit]

Will go over the article more in depth later, but one thing quickly jumps out: the blank spots in the stats should have dashes in them. Kaiser matias (talk) 08:12, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I was waffling on that already. Generally, I have used emdashes where I knew the player didn't play, and left blank when the stats were not available. This works just as well, however. And thanks for the review!Resolute 16:59, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now for the rest of the review:

  • In regards to his birth date: Seeing how the only source for him being born in 1897 is his enlistment papeer, and everything else saying 1898, I'm inclined to think that he may have been one of the many to lie about their age when they enlisted. And seeing how that is the only source giving 1897 as his birth year, I'd be weary of using it against other evidence stating otherwise.
  • Alaney2k and I had a brief discussion on it at his talk page. I do have access to the New York Times article he refers to, and it does state Johnson died at age 81, which would support an 1897 birthdate. But you are right that the majority of sources say 1898. I'll change it back, and if we find stronger evidence for 1897, can always revisit.
  • In the early life section it says he played for the Monarchs, but doesn't say what league they played in, if any. Some clarification on their playing structure (league play, exhibition against senior teams, etc) should be included.
    • Fixed
  • Is there any source explaining why he missed nearly half the Rangers games in their first season?
    • Found it - broken collar bone
  • "but finished the season with 66 penalties in minutes." This makes it sound like his PIM total is significant without explaining why. Should include that it was second highest on the team to give it some context.
    • Fixed
  • Is there a reason why he asked to be released from the Rangers?
    • Lack of playing time, it seems. Added

Just these issues need to be fixed and then it will be good. A shame that there are no free images of him though. Kaiser matias (talk) 19:08, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And all should be addressed, thanks! Resolute 17:09, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Passed. Kaiser matias (talk) 17:38, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In regards to his nickname Ching, the article as it currently stands words it in a way that makes it seem that he got this nickname while playing on the big scene, but this is not true as he already had this nickname while playing in his hometown of Winnipeg, many years before he even appeared in the NHL. Just read some old Winnipeg papers from 1918–19 or 1919–20 and he's Ching Johnson there. New York Rangers aren't mentioned in the paragraph, but the club is mentioned in the source the claim links to. --Fairhop (talk) 18:00, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
